Celebrating Culture, Heritage, and Sustainability During Hispanic Heritage Month
One of the most meaningful ways we connect with one another is by sharing our cultures. Whether through food, music, dance, or even gardening, these traditions help us understand each other’s stories and celebrate the rich diversity within our communities.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the youth of The Foundation were invited by Latinos Unidos y Floreciendo and the Seattle Seahawks to attend a special celebration at the Latinos Unidos y Floreciendo farm. The event brought together community members, local leaders and young people to honor the deep traditions and lasting impact of Hispanic culture.
Our teens had the opportunity to experience traditional Aztec and Hispanic dances, learning not only the movements but also the histories and cultural significance behind them. They enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by a local vendor—featuring fresh salsa made from vegetables grown and harvested right on the farm.
During the event, a community panel shared insights on sustainability and local farming, highlighting the importance of reducing food waste in our communities. The discussion touched on ways we can all help address the more than 60,000 tons of food waste produced in Clark County each year, inspiring our teens to think critically about their own environmental impact.
Alongside Blitz, the Seahawks’ beloved mascot, and his team, the teens learned about trench composting and got hands-on experience sampling ripe tomatoes straight from the vine. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and connection—a perfect blend of cultural appreciation and environmental education.
Events like these help our teens not only celebrate and respect other cultures but also take pride in seeing their own reflected and represented. We’re grateful to Latinos Unidos y Floreciendo and the Seattle Seahawks for hosting such a vibrant and meaningful experience. Together, we’re helping the next generation grow in cultural understanding, community pride and environmental awareness.
